So what makes a handmade leather belt the best choice for raw selvedge denim?
Things to consider when choosing a leather belt for selvedge denim
- Craftsmanship
- Quality materials
- Custom sizing
- Support a small maker company
1. The craftsmanship.
When considering a leather belt for selvedge denim, a handmade leather belt made with care and attention to details is a great choice! These belts are very often durable and built to last. Skilled artisans take the time to ensure each belt is carefully crafted, resulting in a superior product compared to mass-produced options. We for example, use a single strap of leather vs two pieces in cheaper belts. We thin the leather at the buckle to make it less bulky. Bevelling the edges makes the edges rounder and more comfortable. We also burnish the edges with dye and beeswax to make it resistant to the elements. All of these steps take time however most craftsmen like me do it because we want to outdo our last creation and know deep down that we made your product to the best of our current abilities.
2. Quality materials
Any maker worth their salt would not put in their time and effort to make cheap products. What is the point of that? Where is the value in that? It is passion, a craft of perfection that we are after! Usually a hand-made leather belt is made using very high quality full grain leather that is vegetable tanned. This is the type of leather that you see on beautiful leather goods. Not only do they last longer, but also age beautifully creating a beautiful patina. We use almost exclusive Swedish leather from Tärnsjö Garveri just north of Stockholm.
Handmade leather belts also come with solid metal hardware e.g brass which is corrosion resistant. It might feel a little expensive with these belts but like they say buy cheap buy twice. These belts are going to last decades and considering that you would have saved money on buying 5-8 cheap belts, it is definitely cheaper in the long run; not to mention the gorgeous patine on the way!!
3. Custom sizing
Promise me, you will never wear belts that are so long that the tip goes behind your back or the belt is so loose that the buckle is hanging on the pants. Not only does it look sloppy but it also spoils the entire outfit! I mean how much does one have to future proof it for weight gain? 🙂 I think the best is to leave about 18cm from the middle hole to the end of the belt. Here is an illustration on how we advise to measure your belt size.
4. Support a small maker company
When you buy from a small maker, you are not only supporting the craft, but also the crafter and their families. Every order means so much! I for sure do a little happy dance with every order we get :).
Very often small makers take the time and effort to really hone their craft. And the result shows in the products they put out. I can easily bet that most small makers belts are way better than belts from most of the high street designer brands. And the reason are craftsmanship, quality materials and custom sizing!
If you are reading this article to research a leather belt for selvedge denim, you probably have a pair of jeans from small niche brands that stand for quality and craftsmanship of their jeans. Why not pair them with belts from small makers who share the same values as these niche denim makers?
